What is solid-liquid extraction?
Solid-liquid extraction is a process where mixtures that contain solids and liquids are separated into their own components. Common solid-liquid extraction equipment includes centrifuges, filters, and steam traps.
What are examples of general processes of solid-liquid extraction?
– Leaching, dissolving solids in a liquid solvent (usually acids) to extract substances
– Filtration, the use of a material that only allows fluids to pass through
– Distillation, the process of separating liquids with varying boiling points, or boiling a liquid off of a solid.
What properties does lycopene have?
The chemical structure for lycopene is shown below:
As lycopene has no polar bonds, lycopene is insoluble in plain water. However, lycopene is soluble in organic solvents. We take advantage of this fact to use ethyl acetate to extract lycopene from tomatoes.
